The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
