Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in connection with the incident," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
